People who are aiming to work, study or live abroad often need to take standardized English tests to achieve their goals. There are a number of these tests, but the most popular among examinees are Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Test takers often choose between the three depending on their purpose and the country that they are aiming to go to. Certain companies and universities require IELTS, instead of TOEIC or TOEFL. But then again, this varies from country to country.

DLA offers preparation courses for the three most popular standardized English tests. These courses aim to prepare you for your respective exams. With these courses, you will know common errors committed by test takers in various exams sections, get useful tips, practice techniques to maximize your time in answering, and many others!

According to their official website, IELTS is “the high-stakes English test for study, migration or work”. True enough, the IELTS exam can be used for both work and academic purposes and is accepted in countries such as UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand. The test is identical to the TOEIC and TOEFL when it comes to structure, as it is also divided into four skills: Reading, Speaking, Writing and Listening. It has two types, the IELTS Academic and the IELTS General Training.

The IELTS Academic test is for people whose goal is to enter higher education studies or professional registration in English-speaking countries abroad. The test often focuses on academic language and situations. On the other hand, the IELTS General Training is suitable for those who are aiming to work or undergo training programs. The IELTS scoring range for each skill is from 0 to 9, and this is called a band score. There is no passing or failing score in IELTS, although most employers and educational institutions require a minimum score of 5.0.

The TOEFL is a proficiency exam administered by the ETS. It has two general classifications: the TOEFL iTP and the TOEFL iBT. The former is paper-based while the latter is administered over the internet. The TOEFL iBT, given that it is much more accessible than the iTP, is more popular among test takers. The exam is divided into four sections: Listening, Speaking, Writing and Speaking. All in all, the exam will last for 3.5 hours. If an examinee fails the test, he or she may retake it after a 12-day period.

The TOEFL is usually used for academic purposes and is scored on a scale of 0 to 120. Examinees must aim for at least a score of 78, although some educational institutions require a score of 90-110.

Like the TOEFL, the TOEIC is also administered by the ETS and is divided into the same 4 sections. But while the TOEFL is often used for academic purposes, the TOEIC measures the English skills of examinees as in an international environment as questions usually deal with real-life work situations. The maximum possible score is 990, and so, TOEIC examinees must aim for at least a score of 700 points.
